Onchocerciasis in tropical neurology: A scoping review

Background Onchocerciasis is a serious problem in tropical areas. The role of the parasite as factor associated with neurological diseases needs to be addressed because it might involve reduction risk via elimination strategies. We performed systematic scoping review identify available studies on this association and put into perspective different methodological approaches for interpreting evidence. Methodology A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE (Pubmed) through October 1, 2020. included all evaluating between onchocerciasis four (epilepsy, nodding syndrome, Nakalanga encephalitis) countries. descriptive critical summary results provide an overview findings. Results Overall, 161 articles were identified search. After full-length examination, we twelve epilepsy three syndrome. Two meta-analyses case-control found modest strength O. volvulus epilepsy. Recent original support significant association. Epidemiological suggest however, level evidence from relatively low. No measure reported There no specific study encephalitis. Conclusion seems increasingly likely. However, there are still many unanswered questions about clinical presentations Strong international collaboration essential improve our understanding factors physiopathological mechanisms these intriguing conditions.
